“Brooklyn in Kingston”

Over the course of the past year, at Brooklyn and downtown Manhattan book events for the two essay anthologies I’ve edited about loving and leaving New York City, a good number of people have approached me with the same question: “Should I move to Kingston too?”….. The perfect balance of city and country, with nature a fifteen-minute drive in just about any direction. And of course the considerably lower cost of living in houses, apartments, and loft spaces much larger than anywhere in the five boroughs, usually for less than half the rent.... Read more

Is Kingston the New Brooklyn?

For decades, people have been moving from New York City to the country in search of space and the good life. But in recent years, the migration north has shifted. Suddenly, with the opening of dozens of über-hip coffee shops and restaurants, and hipsters roaming our streets, everyone is wondering — are we really the New Brooklyn?..... Read more

“Take a Look at the Coming 'Metro' Project That Will Transform Kingston's Midtown”

With its simple, functional design, the Pilgrim Furniture Factory building had a modern — almost futuristic look — when architect Albert E. Milliken finalized his plans in 1946. Although such design elements may now seem retro, the former Kingston factory is ready to embrace the future. Plans have been finalized to transform the building, now called The Metro, into a creative hub, tying in film production and other endeavors that will bring jobs and visitors into midtown Kingston. A few years ago the building attracted the attention of the Kingston-based non profit organization RUPCO, which recently re-imagined Kingston’s Lace Mill into an art mecca.. Read more

The Brooklyn vibe

Uptown Kingston is evolving. North Front Street just got four new businesses, all with owners from Brooklyn. “Uptown Kingston obviously isn’t Brooklyn North, and I laugh when I see real-estate ads for places in ‘Brooklyn Kingston’,” said Sari Botton, a writer and editor of an anthology of essays about loving New York City and leaving it. “But I see the appeal for people who have lived in the city. Tess and Chris were going to open a place in Brooklyn, she said, but their weekend home in Kingston drew her in. Read more

Kingston’s Uptown real estate surge

A red-hot real estate market has brought in to Uptown a tsunami of downstate money from investors willing to pay cash for properties at prices that would have been considered a good joke just a few years ago. But the sudden turnover of parcels at lofty prices has also led to the departure of longtime commercial tenants — and concern for the future among those who remain. Read more

Digital dynamos have turned Kingston into Brooklyn north

Mark Marshall moved upstate to Kingston three years ago, drawn by the former state capital's growing community of digital entrepreneurs, waterfront charm and thriving arts scene. Marshall is among a growing number of New Yorkers involved in digital media who are gravitating to Kingston, for the industrial and artsy flavor of Brooklyn combined with the real estate values of the boonies…. Kingston: Capital of Culture

Indeed, ask just about anybody with a creative inkling, and they'll surely tell you that Kingston rocks. That it does. But it also paints, dances, acts, films, and otherwise creates. The small city-that-could—a neo-Bohemian waypoint between New York City and Albany—is in the midst of a full-fledged, synergistic, arts-driven urban revitalization and reinvention. It's been bolstered by a burgeoning creative-class citizenry, with newcomers drawn by the flourishing arts-and-music scene, paired with the city's historic sites, diverse architectural inventory, outstanding dining, natural beauty (with a location wedged between the Catskills and Hudson River), and overall affordability….
